"To educate a person in mind and not morals is to educate a menace to society." -Theodore Roosevelt
I have been thinking a lot lately after watching bizzare incidents across the world. So many cases of moral decay in our societies from rape to murder to bestiality, selling human body parts to the ultimate evil of human trafficking. The value of things has gone higher than the value of human life. Where did we go wrong as human beings ? could this be a curse directed upon us as a results of our misguided choices in life? I have been reading wide and wirld with an aim of trying to find what really ail our societies.
"In recent years, some schools have tried to add moral development to their curriculum. But schools have a tough time teaching kids values because they intervene too late, not to mention in too much isolation from the rest of the child’s life. Worse yet, they are often at odds with what the child is learning at home about values." (except from Aha! Parenting.com tittled 15 ways to raise a child)
When I was growing up, my late grand mother God bless her soul, taught me three lessons beside her being so kind, welcoming and forgiving above all commited to church and making sure we prayed daily. First she taught me not to ever desire to win an argument in life for a wise person understands when to back off and and demonstate their idea through actions. Secondly she taught me to love both friends and foes equally. I couldn't quite agree with her on this one until she explained why and how. She said to me " my grandson, if it were not your enemies or competitors, you couldn't be awake working so hard not only to prove your great potential but also to better your life. On the other hand, if it were not your friends and family, you couldn't be sleeping like you do at night with a great sense of security." As i grew up I realized truly I needed both friends and foes to grow in life. Third lesson she taught me was never to compromise my dignity no matter how much money is placed on my table in exchange. A house without walls is defenceless. You must have boundaries to not only restrain you, but also to secure you from unnecessary harm.
There are three steps that our children get information from to buld their character and subsequent success on their quest.. (1) Parents for...GUIDANCE AND MORAL VALUES (2) School for...KNOWLEDGE and (3) Media/Technology for ...INFORMATION/ ENTERTAINMENT. Everything is going wrong around us because the first step has grown weaker and weaker through the times.
In his article on The Los Angeles Times dated January 14 2015, Phil Zuckerman says "The number of American children raised without religion has grown significantly since the 1950s, when fewer than 4% of Americans reported growing up in a nonreligious household, according to several recent national studies. That figure entered the double digits when a 2012 study showed that 11% of people born after 1970 said they had been raised in secular homes. This may help explain why 23% of adults in the U.S. claim to have no religion, and more than 30% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 say the same.So how does the raising of upstanding, moral children work without prayers at mealtimes and morality lessons at Sunday school? Quite well, it seems."
The love and attention you don't give to your child is being given to them from different sources. Do not sit and cry on seeing the escalating waywadness exhibited by our youths. We all have a resposibility in ensuring that we model an upright path for our children so that when they grow up, they may not depart from it.
